Companies should therefore work hard to ensure that employees will choose them over competing alternatives, stay with them and give their discretionary effort towards achieving the company’s objectives.

‘However, it has not been clear how this value is created. As a result, LAPFF is conducting on-going research into human capital management in order to clarify how people, and human capital more broadly, contribute to value creation at companies.’

The Forum’s human capital work covers topics addressed in other LAPFF work streams as well, such as supply chains, human rights, and diversity. However, LAPFF is structuring its human capital engagement around governance elements to test the 2016 human capital policies stemming from its research. The Forum has also engaged with leaders on human capital, such as SSE, to understand better how companies are managing human capital in practice and with those companies facing human capital challenges, such as Sports Direct.

Prior to the focus on human capital, LAPFF was already engaging on employment and human capital issues, both in its own right and through collaborative efforts. For example, LAPFF supported a shareholder resolution at National Express that requested an independent assessments of labour conditions at the Company’s US subsidiary.

LAPFF also supported a shareholder resolution at Sports Direct on human capital management strategy. Each resolution garnered significant support from shareholders.
